If You Wouldn’t Let Your Phone Die, Why Let Yourself?

Can You Use Your Phone for a Week Without Charging It?

Of course you can't. You'd never expect a device to run on empty.

Yet, when it comes to our own minds and bodies, we often expect exactly that.

I was working with a client who was deeply drained, yet pushing harder, convinced they just needed more discipline. To challenge this, I shared a simple metaphor, one I now offer to you.

The logic we apply to our technology is the very logic we deny ourselves: a system cannot run without a source of energy. If you wouldn’t expect your phone to run on empty, why expect it from yourself?

Your Invitation to Recharge

Start by simply noticing: what's your battery level right now? Are you at 80%? 20%?

Now, imagine your phone was at that same low-energy level. What would you do? What would it look like to "plug in" for even five minutes?

The next time you feel your battery dipping into the red, or you feel that familiar guilt for needing a break, ask yourself the simple question:

“If my phone was at 10%, what would I do?”

You would plug it in. You wouldn't get angry at it for not functioning. You'd give it what it needs to recharge.

This is what proactive rest is. It’s not a luxury or a reward. It’s your fundamental charging cycle. As the writer Melody Beattie reminds us, “Taking time to rest, renew, and refresh yourself isn't wasted time. Recharge. Choose what energizes you.” This is how you move from a state of constant survival to a state of sustainable repair.

Once you start noticing your energy levels, the next step is learning how to maintain them.

Your Path Forward

Think of micro-rests as plugging your phone in for 15 minutes here and there throughout the day. You don't wait for it to die completely. You top up the charge to keep it functional.

Your energy works the same way. You don't have to wait for a full-scale collapse. Grant yourself permission for those small, essential charging moments before your system forces a shutdown.

The goal isn't to never be tired. The goal is to respond to your low battery with the same simple, non-judgmental logic you'd use for any other essential tool: by recharging.
