5 Things No One Tells You About Losing a Job

Who Am I Without My Job Title? A reflection guide after a career transition

You lost your job. But somehow, it feels like you lost more than that.

Maybe you are doing everything you are "supposed" to do.

Updating your CV.

Looking at job openings.

Talking to recruiters.

Trying to figure out what comes next.

But something still feels different.

You feel less confident.

Less grounded.

Less certain about yourself.

And maybe the hardest question is one you never expected to ask:

Who am I without my job title?

If this feels familiar, you are not alone.

A career transition can affect much more than your work. It can quietly change how you see yourself, how you measure your worth, and how you imagine your future.

Take a few moments to see if you recognise yourself in these five experiences.

1. You hesitate when someone asks: "What do you do?"

A simple question suddenly doesn't feel so simple.

You may find yourself:

  • searching for the "right" answer

  • feeling uncomfortable introducing yourself

  • missing the confidence that came with your previous role

Sometimes, a job title becomes more than a description of our work.

It quietly becomes part of how we see ourselves.

When that title changes or disappears, it can feel like we have lost a part of ourselves.

2. You feel pressure to move on quickly, but something inside isn't ready

You know you need to do something.

You feel that you should already have a plan.
That you should be doing more.
That you shouldn't still be struggling with this.

But somewhere inside, you feel stuck.

Maybe you're tired.
Maybe you're uncertain.
Maybe part of you knows that rushing into the next thing won't answer the deeper questions you're carrying.

When we face uncertainty, taking action can feel safer than sitting with what we've lost.

But sometimes, before asking:
“What's my next job?”
we need to pause and ask:
“What do I need right now?”

3. Your confidence feels different after leaving your role

You know you've achieved things.

You know you have valuable skills and experience.

But somehow, your confidence doesn't feel the same.

You may find yourself:

  • questioning your abilities

  • comparing yourself with others who seem to be moving forward

  • wondering whether you're still as capable as you used to feel

You haven't suddenly become less capable.

But something about the way you see yourself may have changed.

And sometimes, when our circumstances change, our confidence needs some space to catch up.

4. You miss more than the job itself

Maybe you expected to miss the work.

But maybe you also miss things around it.

The rhythm of your days.

The familiar faces.

Having somewhere to be.

Being part of something.

Knowing what Monday morning looks like.

These things can be easy to dismiss because they don't appear on a list of what you've "lost."

But they matter.

And sometimes, the hardest part is not knowing exactly what you're grieving.

You just know that something feels missing.

And if you're an expat, there may be another layer.

Uncertainty about your future in a new country.

Questions about whether to stay or leave.

The feeling that your career transition is affecting more than just your work.

These are not signs of weakness.

They are human responses to a significant life transition.

5. Part of you is wondering if you want something different

This one can be uncomfortable.

Because even while you're thinking about what comes next, another part of you may be asking:

"Do I really want to go back to the way things were?"

Maybe there were parts of your old life that worked.

And parts that didn't.

Maybe this transition has made you notice things you had been tolerating.

Maybe you're beginning to wonder what would feel more meaningful, sustainable, or simply more like you.

You don't need to know the answer yet.

Sometimes the question itself is important.

A moment to reflect

You don't need to have answers to everything.

Just notice what comes up.

  • What has this transition changed about the way you see yourself?

  • What do you miss that you didn't expect to miss?

  • If your job title no longer defined you, what would you want to define you instead?

Your job title may have changed. Your worth has not.
