The 5 Signs Your Exhaustion Is Depletion, Not Stress
A simple 3-minute self-check to help you understand what your tiredness might actually be telling you.
You sleep, but still wake up tired?
It might not be stress.
Sometimes exhaustion isn't caused by doing too much. It's what happens when your emotional, mental, and physical reserves have been running low for longer than you realized.
Take a few moments to read through these five signs and simply notice what feels familiar.
1. Rest does not feel like it restores you
Even after sleep, weekends, or time off, you still don't feel fully recharged.
Something underneath still feels unchanged.
2. Small things feel heavier than they used to
Everyday tasks, decisions, or conversations require more effort than they used to.
Not because they're more difficult, but because your system already feels full.
If these first two signs already feel familiar...
Many people assume they're simply stressed or need to push through.
In reality, depletion often has deeper roots, and understanding the difference can completely change how you respond.
I recently hosted a webinar, "Why Tech Expats Burn Out Silently," where I explore why this happens, why it's so easy to miss the early signs, and how to better understand what's happening beneath the surface.
If you'd like to go deeper, you can watch the recording here.
3. You feel less connected to what brings you joy or meaning
You're not necessarily sad or anxious.
But you may feel less connected to the people, activities, and experiences that normally bring you joy or meaning.
4. You are relying on effort more than energy
You're getting through your days through discipline, responsibility, or simply continuing.
Not because you genuinely have the energy for it.
5. You sense something feels off, even if you can't quite explain why
On the surface, life may look manageable.
Yet part of you knows something isn't quite right.
You can't fully explain it, but you know something needs attention.
How many of these signs felt familiar?
0-1
2-3
4-5
If you recognised yourself in three or more of these signs, it's worth paying attention.
It doesn't necessarily mean you're burned out.
It may simply mean you've been carrying more than you've had space to process or recover from.
Understanding what's happening is often the first step toward changing it.
Want to explore this more deeply?
If you recognised yourself in several of these signs and would like to better understand what they might be telling you, you may find the webinar recording helpful.
